RBI announces small fee on UPI transactions effective October 15

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Malhotra stated that a small Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) will be introduced for UPI transactions starting October 15, 2026. He emphasized that this fee will not significantly affect UPI transaction volumes.

Why it matters

Consumers and merchants using UPI will incur a small fee, but transaction volumes are expected to remain stable.
